After a fall, many gymnasts are naturally a bit tentative when they return to the gym - and sometimes it takes a long time for the confidence to return, no matter how much encouragement they receive. This is because the memory of the fall, and naturally, the fear that occurred from it, is located within their subconscious - which, unlike the conscious mind (and to the frustration of many parents!), does not respond to pep talks or motivation.
And needless to say, when the gymnast is on the comeback trail from injury - even the smallest scare or fall brings that fear flooding back, and all the emotions and anxiety that went with the initial bad experience - and they get to re-live that horrible moment all over again.
This brings the frustrating confidence 'slide-back' syndrome, which is much like a game of snakes and ladders in many ways - ie. the gymnast's confidence slowly builds after the injury, and then in an instant - from the tiniest scare or fall, that frail confidence has slid all the way back to the beginning, to start building up all over again.
This is why it is essential for the gymnast to do some mental training after injury - to build their confidence up to a reasonable level, preferably even before they return to the gym - but afterwards still works just fine.
This allows them to begin their initial routines a little more confidently, and their belief builds up much quicker from there - as success breeds more success, as they say.
Being able to mentally rehearse or visualize their routines in advance - gives the gymnast a much greater feeling of reassurance, than they have from going in 'cold'.
It is vitally important to begin the mental training process as soon as possible after injury, as the confidence problems become stronger and more firmly entrenched as time goes on, making them more difficult to overcome than if addressed earlier
The vast majority of people who purchase our mental training program for gymnastics or cheerleaders have experienced some kind of confidence issue, most often from a fall or scare of some kind, which created an emotional 'blueprint' within their subconscious (the control center of the body's movement), which then created future barriers for the gymnast.

"My daughter began getting afraid of doing back handsprings and back flyaways, and eventually completely stopped all back tumbling. All the reassurance in the world made no difference and she was going to give up because she was not enjoying it anymore. I didn't even know these recordings existed, but they were our last hope. She especially loved going to sleep to the subliminal, and has since turned it all around and the problem has disappeared. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you".
